The Ballad of Pine Mountain // An Original Song About The Mountains of Eastern Kentucky
#kentucky #folksong #hiking
Footage collected on a LUMIX GH6 from the Birch Knob Section of the Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail on February 18-20th, 2023. Approximately 30 miles traversed.
Guitar tracks performed on a restored 1969 Gibson J-50 ADJ acoustic. Guitar and vocals recorded with a Zoom H2 Pocket Handy Microphone and then edited in Garageband.
The story behind the song:
This song was inspired by my journeys through the wilderness of southeastern Kentucky over the past 5 years, namely the Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail. I have traversed those mountains for hundreds of miles, which has left an indelible impression on my life. I have given more sweat, blood, and exhaustion to that mountain range than I want to admit, but the lessons learned, and beauty experienced seems to keep bringing me back there, at least once a year. Enjoy the music and the views.
Lyrics:
On the top of Pine Mountain, there’s a trail that I know
That’s been shaped by the ice, the wind and the snow.
Where the bear are a plenty, and the elk go to roam
And a man goes to hide from his trouble and woe.
----------
The trail’s been a haven by some outlaws of old
Who stole, lied, and cheated, and spilt blood in the cold.
They hid in the caves and bluffs of sandstone
That the mountain provided until the lawmen were gone.
-----------
Now these days the trail is absent of crime
Except for the harsh, slow passage of time.
You see it in the rocks, the creeks and the pines
While the birds of the air do echo their cries.
-----------
Well, I’ve broken my back and heard my heart pound
Climbing these hollers that stand tall and proud.
I’ve soaked the ground wet with the sweat of my brow
And fought leaf and limb until my blood flow-ed down.
------------
The miles are deceptive, with the sun on my back.
The days quickly fade, and the nights are coal black.
Best take to cover when the wind does attack.
The rain and snow assail no chance to react.
------------
The trail of Pine Mountain is a gift and curse.
It’ll test you and teach you for better or worse.
But the beauty you find within this rugged traverse
Is unmatched by any in this great universe.

Just did this in June and have to say probably the worst trail I’ve ever done unfortunately. Terrible marking, gps from Gaia and onX didn’t align. Completely overgrown, in terrible condition from the horses, way to much road walking, all the water sources were dry except for the main creek. Was really excited as there’s not much in the Midwest with this length and difficulty but I wouldn’t recommend. Garden of the gods is pretty though!

    • @BluegrassBackcountry

Sorry to hear your experience was not the greatest. I definitely would not do any of the River to River Trail in June, due to the heat, humidity, bugs, horse activity, and dried up water sources like you mentioned. December was the perfect time for us, and I did a thru hike of it (which is a video on my channel) in May, which was just about the limit in terms of conditions. I used the REI Hiking Project App and we didn't have too many navigational issues. Hope you can get back out there and have a redemption trip sometime!

Thank God for a -25F sleeping bag and a mountaineering tent! In regard to your question, I don't recall any trouble with rocks on any of the trails I was on during that trip. I believe that must be because of how much snow pack was already on the trail that it provides enough cushion to avoid those hazards. Stay tuned, more adventures to come!

I’m sure there are worse. I’ve been on it. There are handholds and safety rails installed judiciously for the casual hiker to hold. The ladder rungs are necessary to scale certain sections but when was the last time a ladder scared you? If so, don’t do this trail.

I've watched this several times already and will probably be singing it to raise our spirits the next time we're trudging through the mud on the PMT. A major contribution to the legend of Pine Mountain! I'm so glad to see that everyone else is enjoying this as much as I am. It brings together all of your talents in a way that captures the essence of Pine Mountain. It really came together well. The recording sounds great, the color grading fits the mood of the song and the trip, and you nailed the troubles we faced on that hike. I was actually starting to think about doing the PMT again until you reminded me how difficult this trip was 😅 0:32 It took me several viewings to realize you can see us standing on the ridge in this shot! 1:42 I love this shot of me and Nick and our weary satisfaction. 2:00 So much stuff happened during this trip that I forget that the first section (with the caves and arches) was the same trip as the rest of it. 2:32 Nice catch on the old wheel. I don't remember seeing it. Great image. 3:25 I love how the mountain looks in this shot. 3:40 This is probably my favorite shot/lyric combination in the whole video. I still have nightmares about that rhododendron hell. 4:15 Nice night-lapse! Is this the first night? 4:33 This shot says it all. It makes me shiver and hurt just looking at it. Very accurate portrayal of the last day, haha. 4:30 Knights of the Satchel! 6:15 Your sacrifice in getting this shot really paid off. It did not disappoint. Part of me wanted to stay up on the tower all night and watch darkness fall over the mountains, so I'm very glad you gave me an opportunity to see it. 6:45 All the drone shots are great, but I especially like the cloud shots, and how the video is bookended by us leaving/entering the clouds. Perfect ending! Thank you for putting all of this together. Your work really paid off, because this turned out better than I could have imagined. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next, and to more time on the trail together! Cheers, brother!

@BluegrassBackcountry thanks man and about that patch, you can go to the knobestone hiking trail association and think they are around 4 or 5 bucks. Not 100 on the price but under 10.

My sister and i r going at the end of june. How were the ticks? Cannyou suggest campsites? I looked on Alltrails and found nothing. Is this an out and back or a loop?

    • @BluegrassBackcountry
      @BluegrassBackcountry 3 місяці тому

Thanks for watching! The ticks weren't great, if I am being honest. I would definitely get some permethrin to treat you clothes and bring deet, too. You can camp pretty much wherever as long as its a few hundred feet off the trail. The trail is flat enough across its 60 miles that shouldn't have trouble finding a spot. There weren't many "developed" spots from what I could remember. It's definitely remote and rugged! Hope you have a good time out there! This is a 60 mile one way route, so you would need two vehicles (one at each end).

Do you have a map or route of your trip that we can follow

You can access Dog Slaughter Falls by either taking the Sheltowee Trace/Moonbow Trail starting at the Cumberland Falls visitor center, or drive Forest Service Road #19 until you reach trailhead #414 (Dog Slaughter Creek). Trail #414 has had some issues with fires recently, so I would check to make sure it's open before attempting to go that way.

Seems like not many people thru hike that trail so there isn't much support or people to meet

It’s definitely less than say somewhere like the AT, but there are more R2R thru hikers than you may think! There are several R2R Facebook groups I follow and I see people finishing a thru hike quite often. Thanks for watching!

I’ve got another 170 mile trip planned for this fall in New Hampshire and I’ve got a lot of training to do before I can say I’m even close to the shape I was in for this River to River trip. Thanks again for tuning in! Be sure to subscribe to stay in touch!

This style of video is like a cup of tea for the heart and the mind. I appreciate all the tedious effort that went into camera placement, editing and music choice. I'm sure a hell of a lot more work goes into these than It feels like it's worth. But for me, now, here....I am grateful to you for it. Cheers

My son and I have gone to Grayson Highlands the last two years. We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Abingdon and walked to the same mexican restaurant you went to. At night they have a lady that does guacamole at your table. Last summer my son wanted to climb some rocks at the highlands when out of the blue two F15s come flying at 50 feet above us. Of course without any warning there were no pictures of the event. We live outside of Louisville.

Hey thanks so much for taking the time to watch and leave such a kind comment! I would love to go back and visit more fo the area, especially when the visibility is better without all the snowy fog. That Mexican restaurant was really good! I loved that they had an entire salsa bar for you to try. Now I need to go back to experience the guacamole lady ha! And hearing those planes overhead in the woods would be terrifying, especially that close to the surface.

I am pretty late to the party but I want to sincerely thank you for putting this into the world. Reverence is not something usually associated with adventurers seen online but I think it's something all naturalists feel, even if they are reluctant to talk about it. You've captured an echo of the magic to be experienced by being quiet in the presence of nature. Thank you.

Hope to see you tune in to some more of my adventures on my channel, I have a feeling you would like them :)
